Dr. Sarah Floud is an Associate Professor and Senior Epidemiologist at the University of Oxford's Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), serving as Co-Principal Investigator of the Million Women Study. She leads epidemiological research on risk factors for dementia, cancer, and heart disease, with emphasis on social determinants and lifestyle influences. Additionally, she lectures and serves as module lead for the MSc in Global Health Science program.
Her educational background includes a BSc and MSc in social science from the London School of Economics and a PhD in epidemiology from Imperial College London.
Dr. Floud's research centers on social epidemiology and dementia risk factors, investigating:
- Social determinants: marital status, socioeconomic status, social isolation
- Lifestyle factors: physical activity, body mass index
Her work leverages large-scale prospective studies like the Million Women Study to identify modifiable risk pathways for chronic diseases.
Recent publications (2024) demonstrate methodological rigor in analyzing dementia risk associated with mental health conditions, breast cancer screening outcomes, and autoimmune-cancer relationships across major cohort studies. Her research consistently emphasizes complex interactions between psychosocial factors and long-term health outcomes.
As Co-Principal Investigator of the Million Women Study, Dr. Floud oversees questionnaire design and longitudinal data analysis for this million-participant cohort. She mentors students through her teaching role in Oxford's MSc Global Health Science program, particularly in social and dementia epidemiology modules.
