Sarah E. S. Sinwell is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Film and Media Arts at the University of Utah's College of Fine Arts. Her research focuses on intersections between independent cinema and digital media, particularly queer and female filmmaking, YouTube, and streaming platforms like Netflix and SundanceTV. She holds a PhD in Communication and Culture from Indiana University.
Education: BSFS (Foreign Service) from Georgetown University, MA in Film Studies from Emory University, and PhD in Communication and Culture from Indiana University.
Research interests span film theory, LGBTQIA+ studies, digital media cultures, and feminist approaches to media representation. Her book Indie Cinema Online (2020) redefines independent film in the age of media convergence.
Teaching includes courses on Film History, Queer Media, and Convergence Cultures. Recent courses (2023-2024) include Intro to Film & Media, Film Theory, and Internship programs.
Awards include the 2024 Retreat to Recharge Fellowship and 2019 Faculty Excellence Award in Research. She serves on the Salt Lake Film Society's Executive Board and contributes to organizations like Art House Convergence.
Labs/Teams: Active in digital media advocacy and queer media representation initiatives through her academic and community roles.
