Professor Sarah Casey is a visual artist and researcher at Lancaster University, affiliated with the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She holds the role of Co-Director of the Practices Research Centre and serves as LICA Postgraduate Director. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary dialogue through drawing, exploring themes like delicacy, materiality, and the fugitive nature of cultural and environmental phenomena. Key projects include collaborations with scientists, archaeologists, and conservators, such as the Emergency! project on glacial archaeology and the Exquisite Corpse collaboration with Dr. Ingrid Mida.
Her research integrates studio practice with fieldwork, yielding exhibitions, publications, and installations. Notable works include the Henry Moore Institute fellowship-supported Emergency! series and the book "Drawing Investigations in Science Culture and Environment" (2020). Casey has received awards such as the Royal Scottish Academy William Littlejohn Award (2024) and the Henry Moore Institute fellowship (2021). She supervises postgraduate students in Fine Art, emphasizing drawing and materiality, and teaches core modules in sculpture, installation, and drawing.
Her projects often address climate change, material preservation, and cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange. Recent exhibitions include Negative Mass Balance (2025) and collaborations with institutions like The Bowes Museum and Valais Museums, Switzerland. Casey's work bridges artistic practice with scientific inquiry, offering innovative approaches to understanding environmental and cultural heritage.
