Sarah C. M. Paine is a distinguished academic holding dual roles: William S. Sims University Professor of History and Grand Strategy at the U.S. Naval War College’s Strategy & Policy Department, and a Senior Fellow at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs within the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Her work focuses on military history, grand strategy, and international relations, particularly in East Asian and Russian contexts.
She earned a B.A. in Latin American Studies from Harvard University, followed by an M.I.A. and Ph.D. in History from Columbia University, with certificates in East Asian and Russian Studies from Columbia’s specialized institutes. Additional qualifications include an M.A. in Russian from Middlebury College.
Her research interests span naval strategy, imperial rivalry, and 20th-century conflicts. Notable works include The Japanese Empire (2017), Wars for Asia, 1911–1949 (2012), and The Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895 (2003). Her naval-focused studies explore coalition warfare, seapower doctrines, and soft power applications.
Key academic contributions include co-editing volumes like Naval Blockades and Seapower (2006–2015) and From Quills to Tweets (2019). She has been recognized with awards such as the Leopold Prize and PROSE Award for European & World History.
