Professor Sarah Brown is a Professor of Economics at the University of Sheffield's School of Economics, where she has been since 2005. She previously held positions at the University of Leicester and the University of Loughborough. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Loughborough, an MA in Economics from the University of Warwick, and a degree from the University of Hull. She has held leadership roles, including Head of the Department of Economics at Sheffield (2006–2011).
Research & Roles: Professor Brown's research focuses on applied microeconometrics, with a particular emphasis on labor economics, household finances, and educational economics. She is a Research Fellow at the IZA Institute for the Study of Labour and an Associate Fellow at SPERI (Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute). She currently serves as President of the Scottish Economic Society and as a Managing Editor of the Bulletin of Economic Research.
Professional Engagements: She has been a member of the Department for Work and Pensions Steering Committee (WPEG) since 2001 and has served on various national and international panels, including the ESRC Grant Assessment Panel (2010–2013) and the Royal Economic Society Council (2013–2018). She was an Independent Member of the UK Low Pay Commission (2015–2021).
Awards: In 2012, she received the Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship for her project on household finances and intergenerational attitudes. Her work often explores social interaction effects, policy impacts, and household decision-making. She actively supervises PhD students in her research areas.
