Professor Karl Taylor is a Professor of Economics at the University of Sheffield's School of Economics, where he has held a Personal Chair since 2009. Previously, he worked at the University of Leicester from 2001 to 2005, advancing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer. His research focuses on applied microeconometrics, addressing topics such as labor economics, household financial decision-making, and the economics of education. He has led ESRC-funded projects and collaborated with institutions like the Institute for Social and Economic Research (2006–2008) and IZA (since 2009). Taylor currently serves on the Advisory Board of Economic Issues, the Bulletin of Economic Research editorial board, and the Department for International Trade’s ODI Advisory Group.
Education: BA and MA in Economics from Staffordshire University, PhD in Economics from the Open University (with Cardiff University co-supervision). His research explores wage dynamics, financial behavior, and policy impacts, with notable projects on alcohol pricing (for the Home Office/Department of Health) and disability benefit claims. He teaches postgraduate econometrics, emphasizing practical applications of OLS and advanced techniques for discrete variable analysis.
Recent work includes studies on charitable behavior, household portfolio composition, and firm performance interventions. Taylor’s 2025 publications analyze financial advice effects and management strategies. He has advised on policy issues related to consumer finance, health, and labor markets, leveraging panel data methodologies for rigorous empirical analysis.
