Sarah Ann Standing is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at the School of Arts & Sciences, City University of New York (CUNY) - New York City College of Technology (City Tech). She has held leadership roles in the First Year Learning Community, Sustainability Council, College-wide Assessment, and the City Tech/Theatre Development Fund partnership "Bridging Theatre and Education."
- Ph.D. in Theatre History from The Graduate Center, CUNY
- M.Phil. in Theatre History, CUNY Graduate Center
- 2-Year Certificate in Acting and Directing from American Conservatory Theatre
- B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College
Dr. Standing's research focuses on the intersections of theatre/performance and ecology, exploring eco-critical frameworks in performance. Her work examines:
- Eco-utopian performance at Burning Man
- Climate change activism through 350.org
- Community-created theatre as cultural diplomacy
- Environmental soundscapes in Schafer's work
- Historical analysis of eco-drama traditions
- Gender and sexuality in ecological performance
She has presented at institutions including Stanford University, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the University of Melbourne, and is the Book Series Editor for Studies in Theatre, Ecology, and Performance (STEP). Recent grants include:
