Sara Nicoli is a Full Professor at the Department of Food and Drug, University of Parma, Italy, since November 1, 2023, following her tenure as Associate Professor (2014-2023) and Assistant Professor (2004-2014) at the same institution. Her international experience includes a Visiting Researcher position at the University of Bath (UK) in 2005 and invited professorships at the University of Lyon (France) and University of Bath laboratories.
Education:
- Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (110/110 cum laude), University of Parma, Italy, 1997
- PhD in Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetic, jointly tutored between University of Parma and University of Paris XI (France), 2001; thesis focused on dermal/transdermal drug administration
Research Focus: Professor Nicoli specializes in drug delivery across biological barriers (skin, ocular tissues, buccal mucosa), developing ex-vivo permeation models, innovative carriers (microemulsions, nanocarriers, micelles, polymeric films), and absorption enhancement techniques (iontophoresis, chemical enhancers, cell-penetrating peptides). Her work aims to optimize drug efficacy, minimize side effects, and improve patient compliance for ocular, dermal, and mucosal therapies.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2024-2025) demonstrate concentrated efforts in ocular delivery (glaucoma therapy, neuroinflammation), nasal antiviral systems, and buccal mucosa delivery using micelles, liposomes, microneedles, and bioadhesive films.
