Sangmi Kang is an Associate Professor of Music Teaching & Learning at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. Her research focuses on cultural discourses in music education, intrinsic motivation, and technology-enhanced creativity. She previously taught at Westminster Choir College and held pre-K-12 general music roles in South Korea and the U.S.
Dr. Kang earned her Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida, a master’s in Music Education, and a bachelor’s in Music (Gayageum performance) from Seoul National University. She serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Research in Music Education, Visions of Research in Music Education, and others. Her performances on the traditional Korean instrument Gayageum include venues at Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill.
Her scholarship emphasizes culturally responsive approaches to serve underserved populations, integrating global music traditions into classrooms. Notable topics include intercultural development in music education, technology applications, and cross-cultural music composition studies.
Dr. Kang is active in professional organizations like NYSSMA and presents at conferences such as NAfME and AERA. Her work bridges pedagogical innovation with cultural awareness, advocating for inclusive music education practices.
