Okon Hwang is a Professor of Music at Eastern Connecticut State University, specializing in ethnomusicology, piano performance, and Korean musical traditions. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University and advanced degrees from Seoul National University, Eastman School of Music, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She is actively involved in composing, performing as a soloist and chamber musician, and leading the Association for Korean Music Research. Current projects include a Korean nanta project integrating her research and teaching.
Teaching philosophy emphasizes collaborative learning, stating, 'Everyone contributes to create a positive and productive learning environment. I learn from students as much as they learn from me.' Courses taught include piano, ethnomusicology, and Korean music and culture.
Notable achievements include a Carnegie Hall performance with the S.O.Y. Trio and the composition Bidan an-gae featured in Jo Gyeong-ok’s 2009 album. Her scholarly contributions focus on Korean music’s global context and cultural critiques.
