Sandy Litchfield is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She specializes in interdisciplinary teaching at the intersection of art, architecture, design, and writing. As director of the Master of Design: Public Art and Engagement program and faculty advisor for Paperbark Literary Magazine, she emphasizes practice-oriented design education. Her research focuses on landscape theory, future studies, social justice, and environmental humanities. She co-founded the UMass Transdisciplinary Future Studies team (ADVANCE Mutual Mentoring recipient, 2022) and leads projects like the Multicultural Futuring Symposium and The Futuring Lab. Previously, she directed the Design Building Gallery (2017–2024).
- Exhibitions include shows at the DeCordova Museum, Fitchburg Art Museum, and Portland Art Museum.
- Recipient of grants from the Puffin Foundation and Massachusetts Cultural Council, and commissions from MTA Art&Design and NYC Public Art for Public Schools.
Her work bridges art and architecture through socially engaged public projects. Recent collaborative ventures include Y3K: On Distant Keys and The Anthropocene Lab, exploring future-oriented and ecocritical frameworks.
