Sandra den Otter

Sandra den Otter is a Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University. She currently serves as Vice-Provost, Global Engagement, leading international initiatives at the university. Her research focuses on British history from the late 18th to the 20th century, with specializations in colonial legal cultures, intellectual history, social welfare, and humanitarianism. She co-edits The Journal of British Studies with Dr. Jeffrey Collins, a leading journal covering British history from medieval to modern eras.

Her work bridges legal, cultural, and colonial history, examining topics such as colonial law, social responsibility, and the intellectual foundations of modern social sciences. Notable publications include edited volumes on Benjamin Disraeli’s letters (2013, 2015), awarded the Robert Lowry Patten Award in 2016. She has explored themes like the intersection of law and imperial governance, Victorian political thought, and the evolution of community concepts in liberal and idealist circles.

Den Otter is actively involved in academic administration and global engagement strategies. She welcomes graduate students researching 19th-20th century Britain or Britain’s global connections. Her editorial contributions and interdisciplinary research reflect a commitment to advancing historical scholarship through transnational and transdisciplinary perspectives.
