Andrew Denning is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Museum Studies Program at the University of Kansas, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He specializes in 20th-century European history, focusing on mobility, colonialism, technology, and environmental interactions. His research examines how transportation infrastructure and consumer culture shaped colonial empires and global relationships.
Denning earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in History from the University of California, Davis, and a B.A. in History from the University of Nevada, Reno. His recent book Automotive Empire (Cornell, 2024) explores how European colonial powers used cars and roads to dominate Africa. He co-edited The Interwar World (Routledge, 2023), a global history anthology challenging Eurocentric narratives. His work appears in journals like Journal of Modern History and Environmental History.
His research interests include colonial Africa, interwar global dynamics, and the cultural politics of mobility. Denning directs KU’s Museum Studies Program and collaborates with institutions like the Max Kade Center for German-American Studies. His teaching focuses on modern European history, colonialism, and historical methods.
