Dr. Sandra Smith is an Associate Professor of Special Education and Academic Area Leader at Cumberland University's Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. She holds a B.S., M.A., Ed.S., and Ed.D. from Tennessee Technological University and Tennessee State University. With 20 years of P-12 teaching experience, her expertise spans special education, diversity, assessment, and literacy.
Her research interests focus on improving educational practices through collaborative strategies, inclusive curricula, and literacy development. Dr. Smith co-authored several influential textbooks including The Student Teaching and Field Experience Handbook and Teaching Reading in Today’s Elementary Schools.
She actively participates in professional organizations like the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and serves as Treasurer on the Literacy Association of Tennessee’s Board. At Cumberland, she directs the Master of Arts in Teaching program, advises licensure candidates, and teaches courses in special education, ESL, and literacy.
Dr. Smith also engages in state-level education initiatives, including work with the Tennessee Department of Education committees and professional development for K-12 systems.
