Dr. Penny Thompson is an Adjunct Lecturer in Education at Cumberland University, affiliated with the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts. She holds a B.S. from Belmont University, M.S. and Ed.S. from Tennessee Technological University, and a Ph.D. in Literacy Studies from Middle Tennessee State University.

Her research focuses on early literacy development, special education, and educational leadership. She emphasizes high-quality education accessibility and the critical role of reading/writing proficiency in early childhood.
Dr. Thompson has served on advisory boards such as the Early Literacy Advisory Task Force, Commissioners Early Literacy Council, and Reading 360 Literacy Advisory Council. She currently chairs the Middle Tennessee State Advisory Committee.
