Sandra Manickam

Sandra Manickam is Assistant Professor of History at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in colonial histories of Southeast Asia. Her research examines racialization processes and imperial dynamics in Malaysia and Singapore during British and Japanese colonial periods.

Research Focus: Explores how colonial powers constructed racial categories and how these influenced social structures and contemporary identities in the Malay Archipelago.

Publications: Recent articles analyze colonial medical professionals, wartime racialization, and census classification systems. Her work uses archival sources to reveal how colonial administrations managed ethnic diversity.

Awards: Twice received the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowship (2019, 2020-2021).
