Dr. Sandra Lindstrom is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Botany at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on the biodiversity and biogeography of marine benthic seaweeds in the North Pacific, particularly examining how glaciation events influenced species diversity and speciation patterns. Using molecular tools, her work clarifies species boundaries, identifies glacial refugia, and explores evolutionary relationships.
Academic History: B.A. from Reed College (1971), M.Sc. and Ph.D. from UBC (1973, 1985), post-graduate studies in Japan and the U.S., and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre. She is Curator of the Phycological Collection at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and holds affiliate positions at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and Vancouver Island University.
Research Interests: Molecular systematics of seaweeds, glacial impacts on species distribution, and the discovery of cryptic diversity. She emphasizes the Pacific origin of Atlantic species and investigates developmental biology in seaweed cultures.
Awards: Her 2011 paper on Bangiales taxonomy won the Provasoli Award, while her 2010 field guide received multiple accolades for content and design. Her work bridges systematic research with practical field resources.
Lab Affiliations: Biodiversity Research Centre and Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Current projects include systematic investigations of North Pacific species and phylogenetic studies of coralline algae.
