Kirsten Müller

Kirsten Müller is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Phycology with a focus on red algae (Rhodophyta), particularly the Bangiales order. Her research spans evolutionary biology, taxonomy, molecular genetics, and environmental impacts of algae, including invasive species and toxic cyanobacteria in freshwater systems.

Her work addresses critical questions about sexual reproduction evolution in ancient algae, biogeography of nuisance species, and microbial risks in drinking water systems. She has led studies on invasive red algae in the Laurentian Great Lakes and toxic cyanobacteria in Lake Ontario.
