معرفی
Kirsten Müller is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Phycology with a focus on red algae (Rhodophyta), particularly the Bangiales order. Her research spans evolutionary biology, taxonomy, molecular genetics, and environmental impacts of algae, including invasive species and toxic cyanobacteria in freshwater systems.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Botany (1999), University of Guelph
- B.Sc. in Biology (1995), Memorial University of Newfoundland
Her work addresses critical questions about sexual reproduction evolution in ancient algae, biogeography of nuisance species, and microbial risks in drinking water systems. She has led studies on invasive red algae in the Laurentian Great Lakes and toxic cyanobacteria in Lake Ontario.
Scientific Awards:
- Outstanding Performance Award (2023, 2022, 2016)
- Homeward Bound leadership program participant (2019)
- Luigi Provasoli Award (2011)
- Early Researcher Award (2005)
- Excellence in Science Teaching Award (2016)
She teaches advanced courses in evolution, marine biology, and plant sciences, and contributes to microbial diversity research through affiliations with the Waterloo Centre for Microbial Research.
