Sandra Cortesi is a Rudolf Mössbauer Assistant Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), holding dual affiliations in the School of Medicine and Health and the School of Social Sciences and Technology. She is also a Senior Research and Teaching Associate at the University of Zurich’s Department of Communications and Media Research (IKMZ), and a long-term Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Her work focuses on youth’s digital lives, exploring intersections between technology, policy, and societal impacts.
Dr. Cortesi holds a PhD in Psychology (University of Basel, 2021) with a focus on youth participation in digital spaces. She co-founded the Digitally Connected initiative with UNICEF and leads global projects addressing AI ethics, digital skills, and youth empowerment. Her research integrates participatory methods and policy translation, aiming to bridge academic insights with real-world applications.
Key areas of expertise include: AI governance, youth well-being in digital environments, digital citizenship education, and cross-sectoral collaboration. She advises governments, international organizations (e.g., UNICEF, OECD), and tech companies on digital policy frameworks. Her work spans multiple regions, with recent projects in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
Publications span peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and edited volumes. Recent topics include youth skills in digital economies, AI literacy, and participatory research methodologies. Her work has been supported by grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation, Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and others.
Cortesi serves on boards for organizations like the World Economic Forum’s Metaverse Governance groups, the Nordic Centre for Internet and Society, and the 20 Minuten Youth Lab. She actively collaborates with global networks like the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (Thailand) and the Council of Europe’s AI Literacy initiative.
