Sandra Ann Springer, MD is a Professor of Medicine (AIDS) and Associate Clinical Professor of Nursing at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Infectious Disease Outpatient Clinic at the Veterans Administration Healthcare Services in Newington and leads the InSTRIDE research laboratory focused on integrating substance use treatment with infectious disease care. Her work bridges the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine and the Veterans Administration Connecticut Healthcare System.
Dr. Springer earned her AB in Psychology from Harvard University (1990), MD from University of Massachusetts Medical School (1998), completed her residency (2001) and infectious diseases fellowship (2004) at Yale School of Medicine. She is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Addiction Medicine.
Her research focuses on the critical intersection of substance use disorders and infectious diseases, particularly HIV. She has pioneered work on medication treatment for opioid use disorder (buprenorphine, naltrexone) among people with HIV transitioning from incarceration to the community. Her current research examines how to bring integrated care directly to communities through mobile health units and pharmacies, addressing the dual epidemics of HIV and opioid use disorder. She has been continuously NIH-funded since her NIDA K23 award in 2005.
Analysis of Dr. Springer's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on implementation science approaches to integrate substance use treatment with infectious disease care, particularly for justice-involved populations. Her work spans clinical trials, qualitative assessments of barriers to care, mobile health innovations, and guideline development. A consistent theme is the integration of medication treatment for opioid use disorder with HIV prevention and treatment services to achieve viral suppression and end the HIV epidemic.

Dr. Springer mentors students across disciplines including public health, medicine, and social sciences. She has secured substantial grant funding including a $11.5 million NIDA U01 grant as contact PI for a JCOIN hub comparing mobile health unit services to patient navigator services for justice-involved individuals. Her work with the International Antiviral Society–USA Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Committee on Framework for the Consideration of Chronic Conditions in Women demonstrates her national leadership. The InSTRIDE laboratory she directs includes a multidisciplinary team of research staff, clinicians, community health workers, patient navigators, and operates a mobile health unit and mobile pharmacy/clinic to deliver services directly to communities.
