Sandhya Shukla is an Associate Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on postcolonial and diasporic studies, particularly examining race, migration, and cultural formations in transnational contexts. She holds a Ph.D. (1998), MA (1991), and BA (1988) from Yale University and Cornell University respectively.
Shukla's work bridges American literature, global south histories, and diaspora studies. Key research areas include South Asian diasporas in postwar America/England, Harlem's cultural geographies, and transnational frameworks for understanding the Americas. Her book Cross-Cultural Harlem: Reimagining Race and Place (2024) explores intersections of race and urban space, while earlier works like India Abroad (2003) analyze postcolonial migration patterns.
Her scholarship has been recognized with awards including the 2004 'Best Special Issue' honor for co-editing Radical History Review. Major grants include the Schomburg Center Fellowship (2005-2006) and Society for the Humanities Fellowship (2001-2002).
Shukla's teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to race, place, and transnationalism. Her recent articles (2018-2024) reflect deep engagement with global Harlem studies and decolonial methodologies.
