Dr. Anne-Marie Lee-Loy is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Associate Dean - Undergraduate Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research and teaching focus on postcolonial studies, diaspora, and transnationalism, particularly regarding the Chinese in the Caribbean and the Americas.
Education:
- BA Combined Honours in English and History, Carleton University
- MA in English Language and Literature, Carleton University
- Ph.D. in Cultural Studies, University of Warwick
Research Interests: Dr. Lee-Loy examines representations of diasporic populations, postcolonial identities, and the Chinese experience in the Caribbean and Americas. Her work explores themes such as cultural identity, transnationalism, and Yellow Peril discourse, with publications in journals like Asian Studies Review, Journal of Chinese Overseas, and Caribbean Studies.
Awards: Her monograph Searching for Mr. Chin: Constructions of Nation and the Chinese in West Indian Literature (2010) won the 2011 Gordon K and Sybil Lewis Book Prize.
Grants & Initiatives: Co-organized the SSHRC-supported conference “Counter Cultures: The Space and Place of the Chinese Shop International Conference” (2011) and is developing an online network for scholars studying Chinese diasporic experiences through the motif of Chinese shopkeeping.
Labs/Teams: Leading the development of an interdisciplinary online platform for transnational dialogues on Chinese diasporic studies.
