Sander van Lanen is an Assistant Professor of Urban Poverty & Inequality at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Spatial Sciences, Department of Cultural Geography. His research focuses on urban inequality, poverty experiences, and social exclusion, with expertise in qualitative methods and urban geography. He coordinates the BSc Human Geography & Planning and serves as editor for Agora and Kwalon magazines.

Research Interests: Urban inequality, social exclusion, poverty mechanisms, social infrastructure, qualitative methodologies, humanistic geography. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to poverty reduction and sustainable cities.
Recent Projects: Staging Energy Poverty (NWO-funded), Michi Noeki Social Infrastructure Study (Groningen Municipality), Intergenerational Poverty in Veenkoloniën (Groningen/Drenthe Provinces), and ESSPIN (Horizon Europe-funded inequality research).
Awards: 2024 Enlight Impact Award, Postgraduate Research Travel Bursaries (2016). Active in Young Academy Groningen and editorial roles.
Teaching: Courses in Human Geography, Urban Planning, Qualitative Methods, and Neighborhood Revitalization. Supervises PhD students (e.g., Thereza Langeler).
Labs/Teams: Leads research on energy poverty, austerity impacts, and neighborhood interventions. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across Europe.
