Dr. Sana Hannan is a Lecturer in Neuroscience at Lancaster University's Faculty of Health and Medicine, within the Department of Biomedical and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on the interplay between sleep and epilepsy, particularly using EEG and electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to study neural dynamics during epileptic events. She has contributed to systematic reviews on clinical utility of sleep recordings in presurgical epilepsy evaluation and has pioneered studies on how sleep stages affect seizure activity and neural networks in drug-resistant epilepsy.
Key activities include organizing workshops on epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease, participating in international conferences (e.g., European Epilepsy Congress), and serving on advisory panels like the Epilepsy Research Institute UK (ERIUK). She actively engages in public lectures and mentoring initiatives, including In2STEM and Bright Club Lancaster comedy sets. Hannan's work spans clinical neurophysiology, translational research, and methodological advancements in non-invasive brain imaging techniques.
Her research groups include the Epilepsy Research Institute, the Neurological Aging Research (NeuRAL) group, and collaborations with institutions like Duke Comprehensive Epilepsy Centre. She has reviewed grants for the MSCA NeuroInsight Programme and participates in multidisciplinary projects such as CLOVER (late-onset epilepsy research) and PPI (patient and public involvement) initiatives.
