Samuel Vigours

Dr Samuel Vigours is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) within the Faculty of Health at the University of Technology Sydney. He has held this position since June 1, 2022, and is also affiliated with the Climate Change & Health Research Collaborative (CCHRC).

With over 6 years of clinical experience as an Emergency Department Senior Resident Medical Officer and Intensive Care Registrar, followed by 6 years as an academic advisor and senior researcher, Dr Vigours brings extensive knowledge of the Australian healthcare system to his role. His expertise spans the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC).

Dr Vigours' research focuses on Health Economics, Pharmaceutical Policy Evaluation, Health System Performance, and Screening and Population Medicine. He has made significant contributions to health policy through his work on the Health Technology Assessment Review, where he authored sections on pharmaceutical price negotiations, and co-authored the Review of the Discount Rate in the PBAC Guidelines.

His current research includes a partnership with NSW Health investigating environmentally sustainable clinical care processes and serving as chief investigator for a project quantifying the costs and benefits of population-based cancer screening. Additional funded projects include 'Strengthening translation of place-based design for health guidelines' (2024-2025) and the Health- and Pharmaco-economic National Technical Service (2022-2027).

Dr Vigours has over a decade of teaching experience, delivering lectures to doctors, medical students, and allied health professionals. His interdisciplinary background in Arts, Medicine, and Bioethics enables him to synthesize complex medical and economic concepts into accessible information for diverse audiences.
