Dr. Rubinstein specializes in plasma cell disorders including multiple myeloma, light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, and monoclonal gammopathies. His research focuses on clinical trials designed to improve standard of care for patients with plasma cell dyscrasias. With a strong background in clinical informatics, he has developed multiple prognostic scoring tools for managing patients with these disorders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he expanded his research to examine the impacts of COVID-19 on cancer patients, serving as site PI of the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19) at UNC. His work with CCC-19 has produced numerous studies addressing clinically relevant questions about epidemiology and outcomes of cancer patients with COVID-19.
Dr. Rubinstein's research demonstrates a strong integration of clinical hematology with informatics approaches, particularly in developing tools for prognostic assessment in plasma cell disorders. His more recent work bridges hematology/oncology with infectious disease challenges presented by the pandemic.
As an active clinician-researcher at UNC, Dr. Rubinstein contributes to both patient care in the hematology division and research initiatives through the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. His work with CCC-19 represents significant collaboration across institutions to address urgent clinical questions during the pandemic.
Dr. Rubinstein maintains his clinical practice while leading research initiatives in plasma cell disorders and cancer-pandemic interactions. His laboratory and clinical work focuses on developing better risk stratification tools and therapeutic approaches for patients with plasma cell dyscrasias.
