Samuel Llano is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Spanish Studies at the University of Manchester's Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. A cultural historian and musicologist, his research examines sound cultures in Spain, France and Morocco with emphasis on urban soundscapes, transnational networks, and racial dynamics.
His publications include award-winning monographs: 'Discordant Notes' (2018) analyzes musical marginality in Madrid, while 'Whose Spain?' (2012) explores Spanish music nationalism in Paris, winning the American Musicological Society's Stevenson Award. Current research investigates music during the Franco-Spanish Protectorate in Morocco (1912-1956), examining sonic resistance strategies and colonial listening practices. Additional research areas include flamenco studies, exile cultures, and 19th-century urban sound regulation.
