Samuel Fey is an Associate Professor of Biology at Reed College, affiliated with the Division of Mathematical and Natural Sciences and the Biology Department. He holds a BA in Biology from Hamilton College, a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. His research focuses on how environmental variation impacts population and community dynamics, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. Supported by the National Science Foundation, his work addresses climate change effects, thermal refuges, and ecological resilience.
Teaching responsibilities include Ecology (BIO 301), Global Change Ecology (BIO 431), and an Ecology and Evolution Module (BIO 101). He mentors senior thesis projects and independent studies. His research emphasizes experimental approaches to understanding multifactorial environmental changes, including temperature fluctuations, nutrient dynamics, and predator-prey interactions.
Key research themes include thermal refuges in climate adaptation, phenotypic plasticity, and the consequences of mass mortality events.
