Nicole K. Johnston joined Spelman College as a Lecturer in Biology in 2022. She teaches courses including Population Biology (BIO 110), Organismal Biology (BIO 115), Ecology & Field Biology (BIO 225), and Marine Ecology & Global Change (BIO 335).
- Education: Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and B.S. in Biology from Georgia Institute of Technology
Her research focuses on ecology and conservation, particularly marine ecosystems like coral reefs and seagrass beds. She investigates climate change impacts and ecological/anthropogenic solutions to marine organism threats. Recent work emphasizes:
- Temperature stress responses in corals
- Climate change effects on coral competition
- Sensory function impacts from ocean acidification
- Predator-driven metacommunity assembly
