Samuel D. Oberdick is a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and a Research Associate in the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. His work focuses on magnetic nanotechnology, biomagnetic imaging, and biosensing at the intersection of magnetic materials and medical imaging.
- PhD in Physics, Carnegie Mellon University (2016)
- BA in Physics, University of Chicago (2010)
Current research explores smart contrast agents for MRI, including scalable magnetogel fabrication and low-field MRI applications. His group investigates magnetic nanoparticle composites, structural/magnetic characterization via microscopy and MRI, and transformative MRI standards for healthcare. Recent publications highlight multispectral contrast agents, iron oxide nanoparticles, and magneto-elastomer composites.
The Magnetic Imaging Group (MIG) at NIST, where Oberdick works, develops calibration methods and standards for magnetic imaging technologies used in clinical diagnostics and government applications. Projects include quantitative MRI phantoms, ultra-low field MRI, and hybrid MRI-glucose sensing platforms.
