Samuel Cohn is a Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds an additional appointment as an unsalaried Professorial Associate in Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. His academic journey began with a B.A. from Yale University, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Michigan (1981).
Cohn's research focuses on development sociology, gender and development, state policies, and comparative historical analysis. He has pioneered studies on societal collapse, the role of women’s economic power, and alternative development models. His work often integrates interdisciplinary approaches, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to address macrosociological questions.
His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles. Notable works include *Employment and Development Under Globalization: State and Economy in Brazil* (2012), which won multiple awards, and *Gender and Development: The Economic Basis of Women’s Power* (2019). He has also authored influential articles such as *The Determinants of the Division of Labor Between Men and Women in Paid Employment* (2017) and *What Marxist Theory of the State and the Brazilian Amazon Imply For the Prospects of Sustainable Environmental Regulation* (2011).
Awardees include the ASA Jessie Bernard Award (1989), the ASA Sociology of Development Section Honorable Mention (2013), and the eponymous Samuel Cohn Award for Distinguished Service (2014). His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, focusing on topics like agrarian origins of growth, state development policies in Brazil, and labor market disparities.
Cohn’s current projects explore societal death processes, reformulating world systems theory, and women’s economic empowerment.
