Samuel C.C. Ting is the Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of Physics at MIT, renowned for his Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the J/ψ meson in 1974. He leads the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment on the International Space Station, a 16-nation collaboration investigating antimatter, dark matter, and cosmic rays. His research spans particle physics experiments, including gluon discovery and precision measurements of subatomic particles. Affiliated with MIT’s Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS), he has held roles such as Editor of Nuclear Physics B and has collaborated globally at CERN, DESY, and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Education: B.S.E. in Physics and Mathematics (1959), Ph.D. in Physics (1962), both from the University of Michigan.
