Samuel CHNG

Samuel CHNG is a Research Assistant Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), leading the Urban Psychology Lab within the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities. He serves as Deputy Lead for the Future-Ready Society programme, focusing on interdisciplinary research to advance low-carbon, resilient, and equitable urban development in Singapore and Asia. His work bridges social psychology and policy, emphasizing applied research collaboration with government, industry, and civil society.

Education includes a PhD in Medical Studies from the University of Exeter (2017) and a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) from James Cook University (2013).

Research interests span urban sustainability, environmental behavior, transportation policy, and public engagement. Key themes include climate resilience, pro-environmental decision-making, and the socio-technical challenges of autonomous mobility systems. Over 100 peer-reviewed publications and reports address urban heat mitigation, participatory budgeting, and just transitions in labor markets.

Grants and collaborations include projects on autonomous urban air mobility, public transport digitalization, and heat health strategies. He advises on Singapore’s car-lite policies and smart city innovations, contributing to national and international policy dialogues.

Ongoing initiatives include the Urban Psychology Lab, exploring how behavioral insights shape urban policies, and the Future-Ready Society programme addressing societal transitions in technology and climate change.
