Samiya Tabassum is a Research Fellow at Western Sydney University, affiliated with the Smart Green Cities Research Centre. She works on the Which Plant Where project, a collaboration with NSW DPIE to study climate tolerance in horticultural species.
- PhD in Ecology from Macquarie University (2015-2018)
- Master of Research in Ecology from Macquarie University (2014-2015)
- Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons. I) in Ecology from University of New South Wales (2008-2012)
Dr. Tabassum’s research spans plant physiology, urban ecology, and climate change adaptation. Her work includes understanding plant responses to drought and heatwaves, biochar applications, soil sterilization impacts, and Phytophthora disease risks in urban forests. She integrates ecological modeling and invasive species dynamics into plant selection frameworks.
Recent publications highlight trends in urban climate resilience, biochar for drought mitigation, and ecosystem risk management. Her studies often intersect environmental science, soil-plant interactions, and sustainable urban greening.
In community engagement, she collaborates with Sydney local councils to promote the importance of urban forests and their ecological benefits, including biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and heat island mitigation.
