Sami Hermez is an Associate Professor in Residence and Director of the Liberal Arts Program at Northwestern University in Qatar. His academic background includes a PhD in Anthropology from Princeton University (2008). He previously held visiting roles at Harvard University, University of Pittsburgh, Mt. Holyoke College, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University’s Centre for Lebanese Studies.
His research focuses on political violence, memory, critical security studies, and social movements in the Arab World. Notable works include War is Coming: Between Past and Future Violence in Lebanon (2017) and My Brother, My Land: A Story from Palestine (2024). His current research explores future studies and resistant ecologies beyond methodological nationalism.
Teaching includes courses like 'Anthropology of Palestine,' 'Violence/Power/Resistance,' and 'Living the Law: Politics, Law, and Culture.' His publications span journals such as Cultural Anthropology, Project on Middle East Political Science, and Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute.
Hermez has contributed to foundational works in critical security studies, including co-authoring 'Towards a Beirut School of Critical Security Studies' (2018). His interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, political science, and futures studies.
