Sameh Tawfick is a Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, with a joint appointment at the Beckman Institute. He holds the Ralph A. Andersen Faculty Scholar title and previously served as an Associate and Assistant Professor at the same institution. His academic career includes visiting roles at the University of Cambridge and MIT.
Education: PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan (2012), M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cairo University (2007), and B.M.E. from Cairo University (2003).
Research Interests: Focus on advanced materials and manufacturing, including actuators, carbon nanomaterials, additive manufacturing, nanomechanics, and biomimetic systems. His work bridges mechanics, materials science, and engineering design, with applications in robotics, energy absorption, and smart materials.
Publications: Over 100 peer-reviewed articles spanning 2025–2022, emphasizing innovations in 3D printing, graphene composites, and nonlinear dynamics. Recent work includes breakthroughs in embedded solvent exchange printing and defect detection in additive manufacturing.
Awards: Recognized with prestigious honors, including the AFOSR Young Investigator Award and Dean's Excellence in Research. Teaching accolades include the Stanley H. Pierce Award and multiple advising awards from the Engineering Council.
