Sameer Patil is an Associate Professor in the School of Computing at the University of Utah, affiliated with the Department of Informatics. His academic career includes previous roles as Assistant Professor at Indiana University Bloomington (2016–2021) and a brief interim appointment at the University of Utah (2021). He holds a PhD in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, and dual Master’s degrees in Human-Computer Interaction and Computer Science from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Patil’s research focuses on human-centered computing, cybersecurity, privacy, and data governance. His work explores sociotechnical systems, misinformation mitigation, privacy preferences in pandemic-tracking apps, and privacy education in software engineering. He has led or co-led grants such as the NSF-funded 'SATC: Core Medium' and 'CAREER: Enhancing Privacy Preference Specification.'
He teaches courses like Ethics in Data Science, Human Aspects of Security & Privacy, and oversees graduate research. His honors include Best Paper awards from ACM SIGCHI (2021, 2022). Patil’s contributions bridge HCI, policy, and technology to address real-world challenges in privacy, security, and misinformation.
