Samantha Walker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), within the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on anthropological archaeology, particularly the social production of place and landscape in Inuit Nunangat (the North American Arctic). She specializes in integrating remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) technologies, geospatial analyses, and community-based participatory research (CBPR) to explore the reciprocal relationships between land and people.
Education:
- Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) from the University of Toronto
- Master of Arts (Anthropology) from Trent University
- PhD (Anthropology) from McGill University (2024)
Research Interests:
- Archaeological investigations of Tuniit/Paleo-Inuit and Ancestral Inuit communities in the Arctic
- Community-based collaboration with Inuit Knowledge Holders to preserve cultural heritage
- Use of drone and satellite imagery for inland Arctic landscape analysis
- Decolonizing anthropology through youth education and mentorship programs
Current Projects:
- Amittuq Archaeological Project: Examines Tuniit sites and Inuit oral histories in collaboration with Igloolik and Sanirajak communities.
- AERIAL Project: Investigates inland Arctic settlements using predictive modeling and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (traditional knowledge).
Teaching & Outreach:
- Runs the Archaeology as Applied Learning Educational Program, including youth archaeology camps for northern Canadian communities.
- Planned 2025 initiatives include skill-level camps for grades 3–8 in Igloolik and Sanirajak.
