Samantha Santacruz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, part of the Cockrell School of Engineering. Her research focuses on developing neuroprosthetics and neurotherapeutic devices to treat neurological disorders. She earned her B.A. in Applied Mathematics (UC Berkeley, 2006), M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Rice University, 2010/2014), and was awarded the Best Thesis Award for her doctoral work. Notable achievements include the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and the Society for Neuroscience Trainee Professional Development Award (2018).
Her lab investigates neural mechanisms underlying brain-machine interfaces, neuromodulation, and neuroplasticity. Current projects include carbon fiber neural arrays, closed-loop neuromodulation systems, and neurofeedback techniques. She advises six graduate students in areas like brain-computer interfaces and neurotechnology. Key collaborations involve developing WAND (wireless neuromodulation device) and advancing neural dust technologies. The lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining engineering, neuroscience, and clinical applications.
Publications highlight innovations in neural recording arrays, closed-loop systems, and neurobiological modeling. Awards include NSF, NIH, and private fellowships. Her work bridges fundamental neuroscience with translational neurotechnology for treating Parkinson’s, depression, and motor disorders. The lab culture prioritizes inclusivity, curiosity, and scientific integrity.
