University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillمعرفی
Flavio Frohlich, PhD, is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, holding dual appointments in Psychiatry and Cell Biology & Physiology. He leads the Frohlich Lab and directs the Carolina Center for Neurostimulation, focusing on network neuroscience and translational neurotherapeutics. His work integrates neurobiological, engineering, and clinical approaches to develop novel treatments for psychiatric disorders. Key areas include non-invasive brain stimulation (e.g., tACS), neural oscillation dynamics, and closed-loop neuromodulation systems.
- Affiliations: UNC Neuroscience Center, Adjunct roles in Biomedical Engineering (UNC), Neurology (UNC and University of Bern), and Electrical & Computer Engineering (NCSU).
- Education: PhD in Computational Neurobiology (UC San Diego), postdoctoral training at Yale University.
Research interests center on understanding brain network activity to design precision therapies. The lab employs computational modeling, electrophysiology, imaging, and clinical trials. Notable projects include studies on depression treatment via tACS augmentation of behavioral therapy, closed-loop stimulation systems, and investigating neural oscillations in decision-making and attention.
Flavio has secured funding from NIH (NIMH, NINDS), the Brain Behavior Foundation, and industry partners. His accolades include the NIMH Innovative New Scientists Award and NARSAD Independent Investigator Award. He authored the textbook Network Neuroscience and co-founded Pulvinar Neuro LLC to advance neurotechnology.
Current initiatives include exploring transdiagnostic oscillatory biomarkers for mood disorders and investigating the role of frontostriatal circuits in reward processing. Clinical trials focus on depression and schizophrenia symptom management through personalized neuromodulation.
