Dr. Samantha Miller is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition and the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS). She specializes in bacterial ion channels and transporters, focusing on their molecular mechanisms and roles in bacterial survival. Her research integrates biochemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics to understand how these proteins contribute to cellular homeostasis and potential therapeutic targets.
Dr. Miller holds academic leadership roles, including Academic Lead for Postgraduate Research (IMS) and Deputy Lead for IMS Health and Safety. She actively supervises PhD students in Biomedical Sciences and has secured significant grants, such as the Marie Curie ITN and Wellcome Trust funding. Her work spans collaborations with institutions across Europe and industry partners like AstraZeneca.
Her research interests include mechanosensitive channels, potassium efflux systems, and bacterial stress responses. Notable achievements include structural studies of MscS channels and lipid interactions, as well as contributions to understanding bacterial membrane dynamics and detoxification mechanisms.
Awards and grants highlight her contributions to bacterial physiology and biophysics, with over 30 peer-reviewed publications. She also advocates for widening access to medical education for underrepresented groups.
