Dr. Samantha McAleese is an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Carleton and focuses on the collateral consequences of punishment, structural stigma, and the penal voluntary sector. Her work engages non-profits, legal professionals, and individuals with lived experiences of criminalization to influence penal policy in Canada.
She currently serves as a Research and Evaluation Associate at MediaSmarts, Canada’s digital media literacy center, where she designs and evaluates research projects, collaborates nationally and internationally, and disseminates findings. She is also a Board Member at the St. Leonard’s Society of Canada, a member of the Fresh Start Coalition steering committee, and co-chair of Ottawa’s Community Adult Justice Network.
Her research interests span sociology of punishment, transformative justice, digital media literacy, and qualitative methodologies. Notable publications include analyses of Canada’s record suspension system, youth privacy concerns, and the impact of digital inequities. She has presented at conferences such as the Surveillance Studies Network and the Canadian Sociological Association, advocating for policy reforms to reduce structural stigma.
Recent media engagements include op-eds in the Ottawa Citizen and Toronto Star, emphasizing the need for automatic record expungement post-sentence. Her advocacy work aims to dismantle barriers faced by individuals with criminal records, leveraging public criminology to inform equitable policy.
