Samantha Islam is an Associate Professor at the University of South Alabama, affiliated with the College of Engineering and the Department of Civil, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering. Her research focuses on transportation and infrastructure systems, with expertise in highway/traffic safety, congestion modeling, and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems).
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Purdue University
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, Purdue University
- B.S. in Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology
Dr. Islam’s research integrates econometric and statistical methodologies to address critical challenges in transportation systems, including crash analysis, roadway departure accidents, and hurricane evacuation planning. Her work emphasizes data-driven approaches to improve traffic safety and infrastructure resilience.
The recent publications highlight her focus on injury severity modeling, crash analysis for SUVs/pickup trucks, pedestrian/bicycle safety, and innovative educational tools like Transportation-OPOLY. These works span empirical studies of Alabama’s rural/urban roadways, large truck collisions, and ITS applications.
Dr. Islam serves as a faculty advisor for the Gulf Region Intelligent Transportation Society (GRITS) and teaches courses ranging from introductory engineering to advanced topics in transportation system evaluation and highway safety.
