Sam Sparks serves as Assistant Professor of Theatre at Millsaps College, bringing extensive multidisciplinary experience from professional theaters and academic institutions including Rice University, University of Houston, and Southeastern Louisiana University where he has directed over 50 productions.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. in Theater from Millsaps College
- M.F.A. in Theater (Directing) from University of Houston
Dr. Sparks' research and practice focuses on theatre directing methodologies across historical periods, with significant contributions to classical works like Tartuffe and Macbeth alongside contemporary productions. His expertise spans set design, performance theory, and the intersection of historical texts with modern staging techniques, demonstrated through diverse projects from Les Liaisons Dangereuses to experimental works like Metamorphoses.
At Millsaps, he leads the Millsaps Players production program and serves as faculty advisor for Alpha Psi Omega (Alpha Pi chapter). His professional leadership extends to the Southeastern Theatre Conference where he currently represents Mississippi on the Board of Directors, coordinates the Denise Halbach Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Performance, and previously chaired committees for Publications and Theatre History/Theory.
