Dr. Sam Reese is a Senior Lecturer at the York Centre for Writing, part of York St John University's School of Humanities. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2015) focusing on Paul Bowles' music and short fiction. His research spans midcentury American literature, jazz aesthetics, and short story theory. He teaches Creative Writing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including BA, MA, MFA, and PhD programs.
Research highlights include The Short Story in Midcentury America (winner of the Arthur Miller Centre Prize) and Blue Notes: Jazz, Literature, and Loneliness (2019). He is editing Sonny Rollins' notebooks for 2024 publication. Awards include Katherine Mansfield and Brittle Star prizes for his short stories, collected in Come the Tide (2019) and on a distant ridgeline (2021).
Teaching focuses on short story form and interdisciplinary connections with music. Supervision areas include jazz-literature intersections and creative writing methodologies. Active in the York Centre for Writing's academic and creative initiatives.
