Sam Nielson

Sam Nielson is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Design at Brigham Young University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in animation from BYU and has professional experience as a concept artist at Disney Interactive: Avalanche Software. His work blends academic instruction with industry expertise in animation and visual storytelling.

His research focuses on animation techniques, visual development pipelines, and concept design for digital media. Key areas include character design, narrative visualization, and integrating traditional artistry with digital tools.

Nielson has received significant recognition for creative work, including a Gold Prize at the Student Academy Awards and Emmy recognition for the production Pajama Gladiator.

He maintains active collaborations with animation studios and engages in freelance illustration, bridging academic and industry practices.
