Sam Lipworth

Dr. Sam Lipworth is a Lecturer in Clinical Medicine at Jesus College, University of Oxford. He holds dual roles as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and Registrar in Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases. His academic background includes a DPhil (MRC-funded) and MRCP, with training spanning pre-clinical medicine at the University of St Andrews and clinical studies at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine.

His research focuses on molecular epidemiology of pathogenic bacteria, particularly combining electronic health records (EHR) with genomic data to study bloodstream infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He leads the NEKSUS study (UKHSA-funded) investigating molecular epidemiology of Gram-negative pathogens and co-leads a collaboration analyzing AMR in England’s bloodstream infections. His work emphasizes AMR prediction from genotypes, plasmid dynamics, and vaccine development (e.g., ExPEC9V coverage studies).

Teaching responsibilities include bedside tutorials for final-year medical students and co-supervision of a DPhil student.
