Sam Goodman is Professor of English and Communication at Bournemouth University, leading research in medical humanities and postcolonial studies. His work examines intersections of medicine, empire, and literature with projects on alcohol in colonial India and COVID-era comics.
Research explores colonial medical practices, representations of empire in literature, and cultural histories of intoxication. Recent publications analyze Raj revival memoirs, alcohol as colonial medicine, and disease representation in imperial fiction.
Goodman directs the Heritage Lottery-funded 'Coastal Communities, Coastal Stories' project and co-led the AHRC-funded 'Comics in the Time of COVID 19' study. He serves on Wellcome Trust advisory groups and UKRI talent panels.
Honors include being selected as BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker. He mentors doctoral students researching colonial representation, creative writing, and medical humanities.
