Richard Berger is a Professor of Media & Education in the Department of Media Production at Bournemouth University's Faculty of Media & Communication. He chairs the University's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Ethics Panel and serves as a BU Learning & Teaching Fellow. His interdisciplinary research focuses on media education, migrant studies, SEND education, research ethics, and adaptation/remaking cultures. He has held academic roles globally, including in the US, South Africa, Singapore, and Nepal, and his work has been funded by prestigious bodies like the European Research Council (ERC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
Education & Qualifications:

- MA in Film Studies (1999), BSc (Hons) in Media & Communications (1995)
Research Interests: Berger’s work bridges media pedagogy and societal issues, emphasizing youth experiences (particularly refugee and neurodiverse populations) in digital and media contexts. He pioneers adaptation/remaking studies, exploring how media forms reinterpret cultural narratives. His recent projects include collaborations with Linwood School (Dorset) on inclusive media practices and a focus on migrant children’s digital communication needs.
Publications Overview: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with a focus on media education frameworks, adaptation theory, and youth media engagement. Recent work explores the intersection of social media and factual TV casting, and the ethical dimensions of media representation.
