Dr Sam Durrant is an Associate Professor at the School of English, University of Leeds, leading the Critical Life Research Group. He joined Leeds in 2000, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2009 and Associate Professor in 2018.
- Education: BA (University of Manchester), MA (University of Missouri-Columbia), PhD (Queen's University, Canada)
His research explores intersections of literature, memory, race, and community within postcolonial studies and critical theory. Key themes include:
- Memorializing racial oppression through postcolonial narratives
- Animism and ecology in contemporary African literature
- Bibliotherapy interventions for refugees
His publications span monographs and edited volumes on trauma theory, refugee narratives, and the African novel. He currently co-edits a journal special issue on 'Animism in a Planetary Frame' and supervises doctoral students working on topics such as:
- Human rights and biopolitics in African literature
- Creativity and ecology in Southern African writing
- Critical theory in postcolonial contexts
He coordinates interdisciplinary PhD training and leads the Bibliotherapy Hub Leeds, a refugee-focused community initiative.
